Despite knowing what to expect, it was surprising to find our drink was still hot by the end. And then, over the course of about 45 minutes, we enjoyed a beverage that was satisfying to the last sip. We steeped some tea, poured it in the mug and set its temperature to 140 via the Ember app. First and foremost, it does what it sets out to do: maintaining the heat of your drink. We had a great time with the 10-ounce Ember Mug 2. From there, you can do things like pair another mug via “My Devices” or see tutorials and troubleshooting by tapping “Using your Ember”. Finally, on the bottom of this section is a button to update the firmware, if such an update is available.īack at the temperature screen, there’s a hamburger menu on the top left. Yes, you can customize the LED’s color (and brightness) so you don’t mix up your warm milk with your partner’s mug of nearly-scalding tea. Basically, there are three things you can do: change the temperature units, turn on notifications and customize the LED. If you press the gear on the top right, there are a handful of settings as well as a section displaying the Ember Mug 2’s battery level. Where it said “Empty” before, the app will now display the actual temperature of your drink. On the bottom is a slider - use this to select your preferred temperature (up to 145 degrees Fahrenheit). Once you’re in the app, it will say “Empty” to indicate there’s nothing in your mug. Then, hold the power button on the bottom of the mug until the LED flashes blue. To do so, tap “Pair new device” after opening the app for the first time. Before you use it, you’ll need to pair your mug with the app. The Ember app is rather simple, but an app that controls a mug doesn’t need too many bells and whistles. And if the light is red, it’s time to charge up. Once it’s solid, that means it’s hit the sweet spot. For example, when it’s slowly pulsing, that means it’s bringing your beverage up to temperature. Right on the front, beneath the Ember 2 logo, is an LED that provides info on both the status of your drink and the battery remaining in the mug. Don’t worry, metric mates, you can change the readings to celsius in the settings. The app provides both your selected temperature and the current temperature of your drink. However, with the Ember app, you can define any temperature between 120 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit. But then again, a nifty invention called ice has us covered on that front.īy default, the mug aims to keep liquids at 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, it can’t keep things cool, which would have been double the fun. And while it can heat up liquids from cooler temperatures, its main purpose is to maintain the heat of an already piping beverage. Likewise, it’ll go to sleep after a time if it’s empty. It will automatically detect when liquid’s inside and begin heating. It keeps your drink toasty by creating a convection current in whatever liquid you fill it with. It comes in three styles: 10 ounces in white, 10 ounces in black and 14 ounces in black. The Ember Mug 2 is a rechargeable stainless steel mug surrounded by a ceramic coating (tip: do not microwave it). Your CNN account Log in to your CNN account
The third and final single from the album, "Get Along with You", was her first solo release to miss the top 40, reaching number 51. "Good Stuff" also proved a modest success, reaching number 19 on the UK chart. Īfter reaching number 52 on the UK Singles Chart on imports alone, "Caught Out There" was given a proper release in the UK, eventually peaking at number four. By October 2004, the album had sold 167,000 copies in the United Kingdom. Kaleidoscope reached number 43 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The album fared better in Europe, where all three singles-" Caught Out There", " Good Stuff", and " Get Along with You"-attained moderate commercial success. Plumbing retro styles is the easy resort of the hip-hop eclecticist, but somehow Kelis' background in jazz, gospel, rock and R&B brings a deeply felt sonic futurism to her debut album The Neptunes makes this interplanetary power-girl mix sound both danceably down-to-earth and shockingly new." In 2020, the magazine ranked the album at number 391 on their updated list of the " 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". But what lingers are the minimalist staccato beats from production duo The Neptunes." Rolling Stone critic Arion Berger wrote that Kaleidoscope was "too musically adventurous and emotionally ambivalent to employ any one attitude. We need more like this." Q magazine's Kerry Potter described Kaleidoscope as "an album that packs punches of the Mike Tyson variety and oozes confidence from every beat Kaleidoscope isn't just a promising debut, it's an inspired one." Įntertainment Weekly 's Britt Robson found that the album "fleshes out her persona with petulant sass and roller-rink whimsy, pegging her romantic maturity halfway between Brandy and Mary J. Although comparisons to Neneh Cherry are inevitable, she does carve out a niche for herself, armed with undeniable talent." NME called Kaleidoscope a "futuristic, visionary, multi-layered work of R&B, funk, soul and rap, furnished with an inspirational, psychedelic spirituality, rarely seen but desperately needed in these cynical times" and concluded: "Uplifting, magical, genre-bending music, if there’s a better debut album this year, bring it on. AllMusic editor Jaime Sunao Ikeda rated the album four and a half out of five stars and remarked that 'the album "showcases the development of a great talent It's when Kelis and her production team create tracks that best fit her voice and uniqueness that the end results are outstanding. Kaleidoscope received widespread acclaim from music critics. The challenge to this style of shooting is combing through the mountain of footage to find good bits and then find the story. Weddings, corporate spots, and personal stories make up much of this genre. What is each of these NLEs’ strengths when it comes to each genre? DocumentariesĪ whole lot of editors out there came into the field watching videos of short documentary-style shootings. Check out this head-to-head comparison between FCP and Premiere Pro with iJustine vs. You’ll find that the tool you are using can speed you up or slow you down depending on the material. Many editors work across different video genres, including docs, features, shorts, music videos, commercials, and more. DaVinci Resolve has always asked a lot of its users, but if you’re willing to make that commitment, it delivers. Node-based graphics allow for powerful compositing but require you to totally rethink how you work if you’re familiar with Photoshop’s layer-based style. In many ways, the timeline looks like FCP and behaves like Premiere Pro. Resolve is still young as an NLE, and Blackmagic is constantly tweaking its design. But when the user understands the software, exposing as many handles and tools as possible can really drive productivity. This stands in stark contrast to Apple’s philosophy of minimizing clutter. Blackmagic developers are not shy about putting as much information in front of the user as possible. Intimidation stands out to many editors as the main impediment to learning Resolve. Such a continuum reveals significant differences, but no sharp lines can be drawn. Objective controls are less prominent and variations in individual and cultural interpretation are more evident as we move across the disciplinary spectrum from the natural sciences, through the social sciences and history, to religion. The data of science are theory-laden, while the events of history are interpretation-laden. In historical inquiry, subjectivity and cultural relativism are more evident than in scientific inquiry, but I submit that this is a difference of degree rather than an absolute distinction. We can acknowledge such constraints while recognizing that the standards and methodological assumptions of historians, like those of every community of inquiry, reflect intellectual assumptions that vary among cultures and historical periods. Historians are held responsible by their colleagues to justify their inferences and conclusions by the citation of historical evidence. There are common standards, which go beyond private judgment. The interaction among historians provides some correction for personal limitations and individual biases. Scholarly integrity requires open-mindedness, self-criticism, and fidelity to evidence. The American Civil War, for example, can be seen variously as part of the history of slavery or of federal union, states’ rights, regional economies, ethical concerns, or democratic ideals.īut despite the presence of interpretation, the historian cannot ignore the demands of objectivity understood as intersubjective testability. Meaning always depends on contexts historical writing exhibits a dialectic between individual events and larger wholes. The historian Carl Becker writes, "The history of any event is never precisely the same to two different persons, and it is well known that every generation writes the same history in a new way, and puts upon it a new construction." 1 A historical narrative has a coherence of meaningful patterns and unifying themes that are partly a product of the narrator’s vision. Changing cultural presuppositions also affect perceptions of what is significant in the social world. The interests and commitments of historians influence the way they select from among the myriad details those that might be relevant to a historical account. How might one compare historical explanation with scientific explanation? Five distinctive features of historical explanation have been proposed. In addition, religious stories are related to particular events in history, and so we need to look at the relationships between story and history in religious thought. Nature is understood in historical and evolutionary terms, and science itself is acknowledged to be a historical and culturally conditioned enterprise. But there is today a new recognition of the importance of history in science. History is usually grouped in the curriculum with the humanities rather than with the social sciences because it deals with the unrepeatable ideas and actions of human agents. How might we respond to the challenge of religious pluralism today?Ī brief examination of the nature of historical inquiry can contribute to the comparison of the methods of science and religion. A final question is whether we have to accept relativism if we abandon absolute claims. Another question that has received extensive discussion in both science and religion is whether objectivity is possible if it is recognized that all knowledge is historically and culturally conditioned. We must ask first about the character of historical inquiry, since nature itself is historical, as are the scientific and religious communities. There are indeed striking similarities, but also significant differences, and both need discussion if we are to represent these two areas of human life fairly. We can now pursue some additional comparisons. A number of parallels in religion were proposed. The general structure of science has been described in terms of data, theory, models, and paradigms (or programs). A significant correlation between speakers’ self-ascribed and listeners’ attributed gender identity was found with a stronger relationship for female listeners. Results show that male speakers judging themselves to be less masculine exhibited larger vowel spaces and higher average fundamental frequency. For the perception experiment, a group of 21 listeners (11 males, 10 females) judged masculinity of single word male stimuli drawn from the collected speech sample. A range of acoustic parameters (acoustic vowel space size, fundamental frequency, sibilant spectral characteristics) were measured in speech collected from a picture describing task. For the production study, a sample of 37 German speaking subjects (20 males, 17 females) filled out a questionnaire to assess their self-ascribed masculinity/femininity on two scales. This study investigates a possible relationship between perceived and self-ascribed gender identity and the respective acoustic correlates in a group of young heterosexual adult speakers. |
